Gilded Palace Radio Show (27th Jan 2014)

Somebody poisoned the waterhole! The new Gilded Palace Radio Show is up with a little protest thrown in for our West Virginian friends. Can somebody explain why there's been hardly any media coverage? Shocking! Maybe it's a good day to get political... just make sure you've got a good attorney (we have: see Track 26).

The early rush of great releases continues - this week we can add The New Mendicants (Joe Pernice, Norman Blake and Mike Belitsky (The Sadies) as well as Doug Paisley's third (with guest spots from Garth Hudson and Mary Margaret O'Hara) to the 'potential end-of-year contenders' pile.

Gilded Palace Radio Show (Jan 13th 2014)

Welcome to the first show of 2014. Not only are there a clutch of great albums for this year already (Jason Eady, Chris Mills, Damien Jurado) but I also appear to have spent the holidays turning up fantastic records I missed in 2013... can't stop playing Shelby Earl, Brandy Clark and the latest Christian Kjellvander. And why haven't I listened to Matt The Electrician before now...?
No good music around nowadays? Don't you believe it for a minute!

On a more sombre note, the show kicks off with a tribute to Will Indian, who passed away a couple of days ago. Will played guitar for James 'Slim' Hand (and Cornell Hurd) and I was lucky enough to not only get to watch him play, but also to travel with him for a few days on James' debut UK tour. Fond memories of a search for "the ultimate balti" in Birmingham, me losing five Texans in full Western dress at Oxford M40 service station (they should have stuck out like a sore thumb, right?). He was a great guitar player and a good (and funny) man. Our thoughts are with his family and his (and our) friends Slim, Speedy and Rusty. There's a nice tribute over at Saving Country Music. RIP Will.

Finally, if you've ever had trouble streaming the show in the past, you'll be pleased to hear that the new Totally Radio site is now up and running. Not only does it feature a completely new look, but you can also stream ANY recent show directly from its own dedicated page. We're catching up :-) Even got a Facebook page...

Gilded Palace Radio Show (Nov 8th 2013)

Already a tremendous year for and Americana releases (The Rockingbirds, John Moreland, Willard Grant Conspiracy), competition for the Festive Fifteen 2013 just got tougher with the release of the new album by Canadian maestros, The Sadies. They have long been Gilded Palace favourites, and indisputably one of the greatest live bands around.

Over the last couple of albums, they have started to produce records that demonstrated a maturity of songwriting beyond the stunning slick instrumentals and fiery cover versions they had made their trademark. And, now, with Internal Sounds, I really believe they have cracked the formula that marries the power of their live sound with some really strong self-penned songs, not to mention a production job from Dallas Good that showcases the band’s talent at its highest point yet. And this in a year when they also found time to contribute to their kin-folk project, The Good Family Album – they look apparently unstoppable!

For many years, we’ve told people they are *the* band to see on stage: Internal Sounds marks them out as a band to be reckoned with on record too. The album’s out now on Yep Roc, with UK and European shows planned for the spring of 2014. Can’t wait to see them again…

Gilded Palace Radio Show (April 8th 2013) - Session with Glossary and Austin Lucas

As if I couldn't contain my excitement about the Austin Lucas & Glossary tour hitting Brighton, I wouldn't have dared entertain the prospect of them both coming on to the Gilded Palace Radio Show. As things turned out, it almost didn't happen: Brighton has some terrible traffic when it wants to and we had to bail on original plans. Wouldn't want them being late for their first UK show, now, would we...?

Fortunately, we eventually squeezed in a chat the following morning before they skipped town for the next show, so  - if what you hear sounds a little hurried... well, it was! Still, we managed a couple of songs and a couple more words with Joey, Kelly and Todd from Glossary.  I look forward to welcoming them back when hopefully we'll have time to elaborate on Joey's plans for "saving No Depression" and the band's habit of naming albums after text from books (Cormac McCarthy, Charles Hale and Steven Pinker). If the reception for them in Brighton was anything to go by, they *will* be back.

Then, despite growing anxiety about the time, Austin took over the microphone and (with Kelly) gave us a beautiful rendition of Alone In Memphis from his forthcoming release on New West (New West!), Stay Reckless.  The album features Glossary backing up Austin on all songs, and - if the Brighton show is anything to go by - it will sound something like planets aligning.  I know I'm incapable of objective assessment here, but ask anyone who was there; it was an incredible gig!

Oh, yes, and as if that weren’t enough – we also have new music from The Sadies (and kin) - any other week that would be headline news itself. The Good brothers, Dallas and Travis - along with band-mates Sean and Mike - have recorded an album with their mum, cousin, dad and uncle. You may already know that 'dad and uncle' comprise two of Canadian roots-royalty, The Good Brothers, so expect this album to have many generations of 'chops'. I'll tell you more a little later...

Enjoy the show!

Gilded Palace Radio Show (March 25th 2013) - Session with Dave Harding (Richmond Fontaine)

It can’t be easy making your way as a songwriter, let alone striking out after a successful stint as a ‘mere’ musician in a band. So, I guess you’d have nothing to lose by compounding the above and moving five thousand miles to start a life in a new country. Dave Harding would know… he’s done just that.

Best known as the bass player and founding member of Richmond Fontaine, Dave has just released his second solo album, You Came Through (on Fontaine imprint, El Cortez). A few months before its release, he also upped sticks from the band’s adopted home of Portland, Oregon, and headed for Denmark with his (Danish) wife and infant son.

Dave has just topped up his English, though, with a short tour of the UK. Dates were booked for the most part through a network of Fontaine fans who have become friends – thanks to the band being just as happy (happier?) to share a beer with fans at the venue bar as to stand on stage and perform a set.

Although there was no Brighton date (this time) I was delighted that Dave made time to visit and record a session and interview for the Gilded Palace Radio Show – and, of course, share a glass or two afterwards! Highlight of the session for me was a gorgeous rendition of Shores Of Cornwall from the album (a song on which Dave doesn't sing on the record, but pulls off brilliantly in the studio).
Three songs are played live and one more selected from the album. Dave also chose a few songs for the playlist from bands with whom he and the Richmond Fontaine guys have become good friends. I am sure I’m not the only person grateful to them for introducing me to Grand Champeen (Fontaine have been their greatest ambassadors over here, as well as covering the GC song ‘Broken Records’ in their set). In addition to Grand Champeen, we’re treated to Stiv Canterelli, Dolorean and Peter Bruntnell. OK, most of them may not be unusual on a GP playlist ;-)

You can pick up You Came Through via Dave’s Bandcamp page: and ‘befriend’ him on Facebook

Nyd showet! Dave’ll tell you what that means…
